Brian,

Your post had me combing my files last night  for my newspaper clippings regarding the
"fusion ballot"  meltdown in  Senate District 65 in July of 1996.   I came across a City Pages article titled "Cold Fusion"  written by John Yewell in the July 24-30, 1996 issue.
It was a recap of how  Progressive Minnesota was left standing at the altar by the DFL
on Tuesday, July16, 1996 the last day to file for office that year.

The  State DFL, under the leadership of State Party Chair Mark Andrew got cold feet at
the last minute and declined to allow  State Senator Sandy Pappas, and State Reps. Andy Dawkins and Karen Clark appear on the ballot as both DFL and  Progressive Minnesota nominees for state office.  Senator Paul Wellstone was also weighing a decision to accept cross endorsement for his re-election to the U.S. Senate.  I was the chair of the SD 65 DFL at the time and had  submitted a request from our central committee to the state party to allow a fusion ticket  of the DFL and Progressive Minnesota in  the SD 65  legislative races.

There is a thread in the MN-Politics  Archives  under the July 1996 messages if anyone
would like to revist the golden years  of  the list.  ;-)

At that time we were talking about fusion between a major and a minor party,  not  two major parties.

In view of the current thread about Dean Zimmerman's status at the
Sixth Ward convention, I am forwarding for the list's information a message
that I sent the week before last to the DFL Fifth Congressional District
listserv; to the Minneapolis DFL Campaign Committee listserv; and to my
counterpart in the Green Party, Holle Bryan.
