In cnia-chat, former CNIA board chair, Roxana Orrell writes: In http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cnia-chat/message/342 >[Sabri] also offered me [Orrell] some special help. He asked me if I'd be >willing to run for City Council against the "useless" Brian Herron, with him >setting up the campaign, etc. This is very interesting that Sabri was encouraging people to run against Council Member Herron. Sabri is now fundraising for Brian Herron's 2001 campaign, and he has donated to a number of other City Council campaigns. Conflicts of Interest: During the business development meeting where the Motel was voted on, Rebecca Polston asked the chair, (Z Metoyer) about the conflict of interest rules in CNIA. Metoyer said that the rules applied to the board, but did not apply to community meetings. However, despite a request to do so, the chair refused to read the conflict of interest policy to the meeting attendees. Orrell hits the nail on the head in her post (cited above): "The issue of whether Zack & Val [Metoyer, CNIA board members] work/rent/etc. from Basim S. are extremely important. It goes straight to conflict of interest on the board of CNIA. Zach (& Valerie) may have a very personal interest in helping through Basim's projects, and under any circumstances it's hard to say no to your boss. How many times has Zach presided over one of Basim's votes, and not revealed that he works for Basim? How many times has he voted for Basim without revealing his connections? It's slightly less important where Valerie is concerned, since she is not the chair of the board or the business development committee, but she does vote on committees and at the board level. In sum, it at least creates the appearance of collusion & conflict of interest, if not the actual thing." I think Roxana Orrell hits the nail on the head regarding conflict of interest.
