This is not correct.  If I recall correctly, Barbara Carlson spent about
$530,000 running for Mayor in 1997.  Sharon Sayles Belton spent about
$280,000.  

In 1997 neither Carlson or Sayles Belton raised or spent much money prior to
the July filing deadline.  This year, the candidates are off to an earlier
start.  

My guess is that 2 or 3 mayoral campaigns this year will spend more than
$500,000.  It wouldn't totally surprise me if somebody spent more than a
million dollars.  By way of comparison, Norm Coleman spent well in excess of
a million dollars (1.5 million, I think) in the '97 St. Paul mayor's race.
