It's been nicely suggested to me that I don't know
everything about litter by two people who see children
and adults on foot dropping litter all the way home
from bus stops, fast food joints and convenience
stores.

Obviously my knowledge of the litter problem is less
than the knowledge Susan Young has in or at her
fingertips.

One question that arises in some minds, mine among
them: Why should we inconvenience all the people who
may benefit from drive-thrus because of some who may
litter?

The easy answer is "we do it all the time".

We do traffic calming with speed bumps and throated
intersections costing us lots of money because of
certain speeders.

I've already mentioned plastic containers in outdoor
eating and drinking areas.

How about stopping multitudes of minorities on
specious grounds because of a perception among the
majority that they represent the greatest number of
criminals?

I remember well the first time in grade school I was
punished by a frustrated teacher/principal who could
not pin a crime on any one individual so they felt
entitled to punish a whole class.

I don't think it would be a horrible burden on society
or business to stop allowing drive thrus. Isn't making
people slow down the process of ordering food and
eating a) in their interest, and b) in the interest of
society, in general, just as handing out speeding
tickets, forcing people to wear seat belts, or
installing speed bumps in the best interests of
society and the individual?
