This thread is wearing mighty thin, folks.
I watched the screening for 8th Ward, but didn't vote because I haven't paid my dues
this year or last, for that matter.
Walt Gutzmer was casual, hands in pockets. Knowing him, he was clearly uncomfortable.
His answers to questions were fine. I asked his notion of tax increment financing, he
gave
a measured, thoughtful answer. At the time, he said he would not abide by the
endorsement. He later dropped out of the race becaue he would risk his pention at the
U. An aside:
Walter is not a risk taker, he's a "steady Eddie", it's one of his good qualities.
Bob Lilligren sat behind a table and answered questions. It was clear that, on the
level of running a whole ward office, he was a long way from up to speed or ready for
the
challenges. He didn't seem to have a grasp of the bigger picture. I don't remember
his answer to the tax increment question, which means it was forgettable.
Herron is a seasoned veteran of these interviews, so for him it was a snap.
It really was a no-brainer if one were commissioned to vote at the screening. The
'would you run against an endorsed candidate' was asked. Both Gutzmer and Lilligren
were gay
--and still are--(course Herron is festive at times). Gay didn't largely figure into
the equation, nor did running against the endorsed candidate.
In his 8 years in office Herron has treated the GLBT with respect and everyone in the
room had some personal experience with him that they could connect to. He has and is
still
going to bat for city-employed GLBT people to get parity in benefits so they will be
getting equal pay for equal work--this is a long march situation. The legislature is
feeling
it's Republican oats, so it is not going to pass this session. And probably not next
session either. GLBT folks will have to up the pressure at the state level to get this
to
happen.
So can we put this one to bed and go on to the next item?
