Citizens,

I'd like to hear any opinions on the Park Board's impending plan to
widen the current paths through the Minnehaha Creek corridor from 6 feet
wide to 10 feet for bicycles and 8 feet for pedestrians. All paths would
be separated, leaving an aggregate pathway width of 18 feet (minimum)
through the corridor. The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District has taken a
public position opposing the project on the grounds of excessive paving
in such a narrow corridor. They have threatened to withhold their
portion of the funding for the project--$1.3 million. The MCWD president
Pam Blixt has referred to the trail plans as adding "a runway" to the
parkway, adding "They are planning on paving over paradise and putting
in a parking lot." [Southwest Journal, 5.7-20.01] A public hearing on
this issue is scheduled for Monday, May 14th at 6:30 P.M. at Washburn
High School. So far, I've not spoken with any citizens who support this
plan for widening the paths and quite frankly, few are even aware of the
details of the Park Board's project.
