I did one time tell my state rep that I didn't think
we should treat the Vikings (or Twins) any differently
than whatever business we were standing across the
street from at the time. The metal plating business
wouldn't expect the taxpayers to build them a
building, why should a sports team? (Frankly, I don't
care if either business is owned by someone who is or
isn't a "millionaire", its not relevant)
That we should put sports teams in a special class and
cover their needs doesn't pass the smell test (neither
did buying Target a downtown store or much of the
other TIF collection of projects).
It was suggested here that there may be an attempt to
finance sports with casino proceeds. While I would
favor opening up gambling (it's a potential
multi-billion dollar industry, creates jobs many of
which are good paying, creates construction jobs,
etc.) and the tourism that comes with it, I am opposed
to dedicating the tax dollars it produces to specific
projects, it suggests that we are getting something
for free which we all know isn't true.
