I have been trying for two years to get my neighborhood
organization's crime and safety committee to organize
some action to control graffiti. They have done nothing
other than to place the problem on the shoulders of individual
residents.
One of the most frustrating problems I have encountered
while trying to have graffiti removed is that it requires a
number of phone calls to different businesses and city
departments to get anything done. I propose that the
city have a single number that residents can call that will
handle all of the required filings (police report, maintenance
request, etc.).
I am also very disappointed that the city council washed
out the guts of the new graffiti ordinance by failing to
force property owners to have the graffiti removed
quickly. Until the City is willing to take a strong stand
on this issue we will continue to have this blight decorating
Minneapolis.
One additional suggestion. It seemed to me that requiring
convicted graffiti "artists" to remove graffiti is an appropriate
penalty. It certainly would address judges' reluctance to
sentence people to jail.
