Interesting quotes:
``People are interested in the drama'' of flashy announcements, media
events and controversies, she said in a recent interview. ``I think we need
to keep that in mind, but I will never substitute image over doing the
work.''
--------------------------------------------
I'd like to hear more about this work. This quote doesn't say anything.
One thing I find interesting is that the stuff that gets posted on this
issues list on behalf of the Mayor's office is mostly image building puff
pieces on the Mayor.
On how race is impacting this contest:
``There is no right answer on this one. I am just a person from
Minneapolis who wants to lead my hometown, and I will do my best to
hear everyone that I can. . . . I am proud to be in a city that has
African-American women in leadership in city hall, in the park board and
the schools, but I have also heard over and over from people of color that
we continue to have a problem with affordable housing and policing,'' he
said. ``We are not yet at the point where we are comfortable talking
about race. . . . Sharon Sayles Belton and R.T. Rybak are qualified
people. They are not qualified white people or qualified black people.''
Sayles Belton echoes those words about qualifications.
``Minneapolis voters have demonstrated that they can look at individual
qualifications, and they can set aside race and gender,'' she said.
Although, she says in a quiet voice, she has had people refuse to shake
her hand or answer her knocks on the door because of her race. Still, the
mayor says, she is hopeful that Minneapolis is as inclusive a place as
possible, and she believes she can speak to and for everyone in the city.
-----------------------------------------
EY: The discussion of racial profiling was the one area where there were
sparks in the Mayor Candidates forum a month ago. Lisa McDonald attacked
the Mayor's record on this issue, and SSB got angry, and responded very
strongly with a defense of her record.
-------------------------------------------
Interesting quotes in the Strib article:
Fighting back
But the establishment is ready to fight back, said Council President Jackie
Cherryhomes and Campbell. Both are ready to coordinate campaigns with the
mayor.
Council Member Brian Herron, who faces challengers for his Eighth Ward seat
and has been an ally of the mayor, said the situation won't affect him. "I
expect the party's support because the party endorsed me, but the party in
all reality has never been a part of my fund-raising," Herron said.
------------------------------------------
EY: Who have been CM Herron's major fundraisers? I'd like to hear more
about this.
--------------------------------
Wizard Marks, the Library Board Candidate:
Does she follow through on promises?
I also have a question for Stonewall DFL endorsed Wizard Marks. When
Wizard was raising money for Hosmer, she was telling folks that there would
be a "GLBT section" in the library. Now I've visited that library, and I
haven't seen this section that was promoted when Wizard was fundraising for
the library. It raises the issue about whether Wizard Marks delivers on
her promises. An important question for a candidate.
RT Rybak and the Star Tribune:
Terrell's comment about RT is right on. I'd like to hear what RT's
response is to this particular charge: that he used his reporting position
on the Strib to try to get a job. RT has attacked other candidates for
their fundraising practices -- so this kind of thing is a legitimate
question -- is RT throwing stones from a glass house?
----------------------------------
More Stonewalling:
David Piehl writes:
David's comments are a lot more palatable than when another member referred to
those who did not receive the endorsement as "losers" who will "always be
losers"; that commentary is disrespectful and does further damage to
Stonewall's credibility. Clearly stating that a perceived lack of a
committment to the DFL was a problem sums it up.
-----------------------
EY:
That commentary came from the Stonewall DFL Chair. When people can't argue
the issues, they make ad hominem attacks--and that's what Megan Thomas did
here. It suggests that Megan is having a hard time defending Stonewalls
action on this particular race. We still haven't gotten specifics about
what Brian Herron has done on GLBT issues. We hear that he's been out
front there on Domestic Partners -- but get no specifics, and that he has
been in the lead on issues of concern to the African American GLBT
community -- and again get no specifics. When Karen Forbes challenges
Brian Herron supporters to help with organizing an 8th ward candidate
forum, we get entertained to a deafening silence. Why? If Brian is so
"prime time" and Robert Lilligren so "not ready for prime time" -- well
then why are CM Herron's supporters so reticent about helping with
organizing a debate? Also, it speaks volumes to how much Brian Herron
values the endorsement, when he didn't even mention it in his DFL
convention speech.
One thing I hear on a regular basis from neighbors in the area, is they
tend to call on other council people -- both Kathy Thurber and Lisa
McDonald get calls from CM Herron's constituents because Herron is
notoriously unresponsive.
