List Members

As I follow the ongoing issue of cross-endorsements, I
wonder if the list members are all-under twenty, new
arrivals to the twin-cities or if there is a lapse of
memory.

During the 1970's, the DFL, because of the grassroots
threat of Charles Stenvig and the T-Party, set a
precedent by endorsing Republicans to brunt the
Stenvig/T-party threat. Specifically, Carol Lind was
endorsed by the DFL and the Republicans for the School
Board. I believe this happened also in one of the
campaigns for Board of Estimate and Taxation in one
campaign year. Also, Stenvig's first campaign may
have resulted in being opposed by a unified front when
he ran against the Republican candidate-Dan Cohen.

List members should take note, that the DFL has a real
neat way of cross-endorsing and at the same time not
really advertising as such. It is simple, when a
non-DFL'er is liked, and that candidate has labor
backing, the DFL sample ballot is not distributed or
played down in that race, and instead the labor ballot
with that candidate is heavily distributed.

The point of all this, is that 30 years ago the DFL
was on fairly equal ground with the Republicans and
felt threatened and something needed to be done, such
as cross-endorsment; then it was "good." Today the
DFL "Rules" strong, and cross-endorsement by anyone is
a no-no, unless of course you can devise a way to make
an "end-run" such as with the Labor ballot.
