Does anyone have the numbers on how many students and teachers are in
public vs private schools? SOmehow I have a hard time with the proposition
that there are so few talented teachers that the private schools take them
all. Or that all of the brightest kids are in private schools.

I went to Bryant Jr and Central Sr in 61-67. I met smart and dumb (and lazy)
kids, mostly average ones. Some went from Bryant to private schools, some
on scholarship. They pointed out that the private schools had their share of
dumb and lazy kids. A number went to very good private and public colleges
after Central, some went to average colleges, some went to work for the
school board, the city, or just plain got jobs, etc.

We had social promotion back then. Don't have a kid in school, is it worse
now?
