Regarding Fran's comments in items 3,4 & 5.
I agree Walter is not the only historian in the Northeast corner of the
city - he was just the one who got it together to take out the River
Trolley and lead about 15 of us around the area. And, whether one like's
Walter or not, he is funny and can provide an education of sorts (his
version anyway). My point was we all had a good time and it was raining
like crazy so we were all glad to be on the trolley and as RT said we
learned lot and lots of stuff ala Walter's version.
Now on to Park Board issues:
I believe our life-cycle planning for park replacement is 20 year's not 30
- although frequently things are moved around for a year or two because of
a variety of reasons or crises that arise.
The "domed" gym was not my idea but I thought quite innovative considering
we were having trouble finding the money to replace the building and gym.
But may I remind folks it takes a 5-4 vote to get something done on the
Board. I usually sit in the minority "4" meaning we don't get what we want
either. And we all know how Walter does get things done and finds his votes
somehow. So as much as I stated over a year ago that we wouldn't pass the
"domed" idea - he collected his votes and got it. What I like about trying
it is it is rather innovative and creative way to get a year 'round
weatherized facility. I wonder if I will be here to see how long it lasts.
As far as Walter being a River spokeperson I just asked how the question
would be dealt with in getting rid of industry for the sake of the Upper
Mississippi River Plan. His only comment was really: it's a hundred year
plan and there isn't the money to get it going yet. That was about it! No
pontificating or other comments from Walter. We were on to other things in
no time flat as we proceeded north.
I certainly do not believe that Walter is the only historian and
spokepserson for your community. Fran, I love to hear your stories too.
And I have a couple of good friends who live up that way - one right next
to the new Edgewater Park - I hear history and great stories from many
besides Walter about Northeast. And yes, it is a beautiful river up there.
I really thought some of us were ecstatic and positive in our reviews of
the weekend in Northeast at Art-a-Whirl. Please take the posts for what
they were - a review of a good, fun weekend which apparently was had by all.
