David Brauer, our wonderful Listmaster, has reminded me that
List decorum means you can question people on the issues, but not on
their motives. He adds "We need to err on the side of civility and
away from personal characterization."
Brauer is right. In going after the conservative assault on
public schools, I also went after Michael Atherton--ascribing all
kinds of destructive motives and agendas to him. And I've never met
the guy. Don't know a thing about him. So I was wrong and out-of-line.
I don't recant a word about the current conservative attack
on public schools. But I didn't need to drag Michael into it. He and
others should feel free to post on this list without being personally
attacked by hotheads like me. I hate it when other people on the List
do this, so I'm sorry I contributed this time.
I apologize to Michael and my fellow List Members
Live and learn. I'll do better next time.
