When the Rich go to Jail
Background:
In these days of a low income housing crisis, when we are 12,000 units short of housing every woman, man and child in this fine city, the wealthiest citizens of Minneapolis are preparing to gather to dance and drink champagne and eat caviar and in general have a grand ole time, for a good cause, in their shiny new 96 million dollar jail. Now that the government has cut welfare and with fewer and fewer jobs offering health care or a living wage, it has practically become a crime to be poor. This new jail also comes at a time when the city has come under increasing national scrutiny of its practice of racial profiling in detainment and incarceration, targeting many communities of color and low income communities. Combine this with d.j.'s pumping dance hall music and black-tie guests fox trotting through the lock - down areas and holding cells, and you have a very disturbing and outrageous spectacle that shows not only the increasing income gap that exists in this society, but the increasing and equally dangerous reality gap between rich and poor.
But they won't party alone!!!
The kind citizens of this city have decided to protest this party and attempt to educate these socialites as they enter their gala ball with their own fesitivities and unexpected surprises!!!
We demand homes, schools, dignity, justice, peace and land, and not jails.
