I do want to take the opportunity to mention that I don't believe the problem is so much the DFL itself, as Lori seems to imply, but rather that because Minneapolis is such a one-party town, the DFL and the incumbents have become politically flabby. Indeed, the Northeaster newspaper wrote an editorial to this effect. Because the Republicans cannot bring much of a challenge to the DFL in the city, the incumbents do not have as much incentive to make sure they are staying true to the party ideals or the constituents wishes. We need to keep in mind that Minneapolis is predominantly DFL, whether some like it or not. Therefore, if there is a problem in the party, then there needs to be a movement to "get the DFL back in shape". This, much like trying to move yourself to start exercising when you don't want to, is not particularly easy. However, it would seem that perhaps non-endorsed candidates may be the impetus to moving the DFL to return to speaking to the many average "non-politically-savvy" DFL'ers in Minneapolis. (Which, yes, includes this non-endorsed DFL candidate for City Council.) My hope is that through continuing discussion, the city DFL will always find ways to better represent all segments of the DFL- liberal, moderate, conservative. This will make the party better, and will make our representation in City Hall better.
