I have been following the posts on the list in the past week regarding
soda pop sales in the Minneapolis Public Schools. The School Board did
discuss this issue yesterday at its meeting, and came to some resolution
for next year.

The Minneapolis Public Schools have sold pop in the schools for 26
years. Our current board is concerned about the exclusive sale of soda
pop, and almost no other beverages, in our middle schools and high
schools. (We do not sell soda pop to elementary school children.)

We received input a few months ago on soda pop in the schools, both
through a public meeting and at the student government. We heard from
nutritionists and dentists who encouraged us to end soda pop sales, high
school students who insisted we continue the sales, and parents who went
both ways.

In response to this input, the board has decided to make the following
changes that cut back on soda pop availablity in our schools:
in our middle schools, ending the sale of soda pop to students, and
continuing our policy of not offering soda pop to our elementary school
students.
in our high schools, ending the exclusive sale of soda pop. Instead,
we intend to offer our high school students a number of healthier
options including flavored milks, mineral waters, fruit juices,
vegetable juices, as well as offering soda pop as one option.

I think the board believes that this is a step in the right direction.
