Here's my brief tale.
Standing at the corner of 12th and LaSalle, hearing a
political discussion my ears perked up.
One participant, speaking of the 10th Ward, said "Doug
Kress is the openly gay candidate. I know him. He's a
really nice guy. His challenger is a pretty decent
fellow. If I had entered the convention not knowing
Doug was gay I would have had a hard time knowing who
to vote for."
No mention of Ann Berget. No sense that policy or
ideas were important. Only sexuality seemed to count
for this person.
Doug Kress may in fact be the better candidate than
Dan Nizcolek(sp?) but the very idea that this sole
consideration may be the only qualification a
candidate requires leaves me feeling more cynical.
Not so much about politics but about the public's
ability to discern and judge.
Oh, the speaker? Former State Senator Allan Spear.
Tim Connolly
Ward 7
P.S. I guess now I'll have a whole nother group
wanting to burn me at the stake!
P.P.S. The parade was a gas. The Aquatennial should be
as fun.
