I guess I am happy Carol Johnson is staying here. We have never met. But whenever I look at a photo of her in the paper I see a very warm and open and inviting face. I know my sister the asst. principal is relieved and generally that's good enough for me. As much as I may be inclined to think keeping Ms Johnson at the helm is a good thing, I am confused by the sequence of events surrounding the offer of a $30k raise. I do not begrudge her the money. Apparently she is in the ballpark of going rates and god knows we face enormous challenges in our schools and if she's the best then maybe $30k more is a bargain. Even so, I want to understand the sequence of events of the past couple days. Right now I am confused. On the front page of today's Strib it was stated "unwilling to let Johnson go, the Minneapolis school board on Tuesday offered to match the $190k salary Nashville promised." In the Local section of todays PiPress it said this: "On Monday, they(Nashville) had bumped up their original offer to Johnson from $180k to $190K." Then it quoted Vice-Chairman George Blue of the Nashville School Board. He said: "We didn't think money was an issue but we didn't want her to have to lose money to come to Nashville." My question is: If George Blue said this on Monday after they had bumped the salary up to $190k doesn't that necessarily mean that either he knew Mpls would raise their offer to $190 on Tuesday or Minneapolis had already offered $190 by the time Nashville sweetened the pot? Following that logic, either the School Board is less than forthcoming as to when they offered a raise or they have a mole on the board. And when George Blue says he feels fairly certain Ms Johnson was not as concerned about money, it seems to imply that Minneapolis was not so sure. Or then again, perhaps the editorial in todays Strib by Catherine Shreves says even more than we think about the foul political, and dare I say social environment, here in paradise?
