Given Papa John's long-time political activism, which bleeds into his songs,
I thought it appropriate to post this news release about his CD reception.
There will surely be Minneapolis politics talked there. - David Brauer, list

Papa John Kolstad CD Release Reception
Thursday, June 28, 2001
Tracy's (Bar), 2207 E Franklin Ave, Minneapolis
8:00 PM until everyone is passed out on the tables.
This is a neighborhood celebration of Papa John's CD release. His has
lived in or near the Seward Neighborhood for 24 years. All are
invited to come by, eat at the Complementary Buffet, hear the CD
"Beans Taste Fine" and visit with Papa John.
Papa John Kolstad has been a community, political and small business
activist since his return from Boston in 1977. In the last two years
he has returned to performing regularly in the twin cities area at
Pubs, Concerts and Benefits.
For 30 years Papa John Kolstad has been blazing a musical trail across
these United States, performing in coffee houses, bars, festivals and
everyplace in between. He performed regularly on The Prairie Home
Companion radio show with Garrison Keiler, was a featured performer at
the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival, Philadelphia Folk Festival and the
Winnipeg Folk Festival. In addition he has worked with the likes of
David Bromberg, Rick Nelson, Joan Armatrading, Odetta, U. Utah Phillips,
Jim Post and many others.
Papa John is an accomplished musician, a fine singer/songwriter and
just plain stellar when it comes to pickin' on 6 & 12 strings guitars.
He employs a variety of styles in his performances; folk, swing,
country, rags & what John calls "happy blues".
Papa John's classic 1975 album Bean's Taste Fine , which features
legendary harmonica player Wildman Mike Turk is now available on that
new fangled CD format. The re-release also includes 3 (count 'em
three!) bonus tracks. A number of leading professional harmonica
players have said that "Beans Taste Fine" is a seminal record album
for the harmonica. Turk's technical brilliance combined with his
fluid, jubilant style makes you want to play the harmonica just like
that. This album is also a classic example of the synergy of the
duet; in this case the 12 String Guitar and harmonica.
Come for the food, stay for a chat, wash it down with a beer. See
you there.
The album is available at: The Electric Fetus, Homestead Pickin'
Parlor, Molly Quinn's Pub and other fine stores.
