For Neighborhood Development Interests:
The Metropolitan Council has announced that they have $500,000 available for
"Opportunity Grants". These grants were formerly known as "planning" or
"predevelopment" grants. Applications are due at the Metropolitan Council
on August 1, 2001.
Opportunity grants can fund local initiatives to develop project-specific
and site-specific plans according to smart growth principles. Funds can pay
for the costs of creating development plans and project implementation
elements.
Maximum award under the program is $75,000. Higher award amounts will be
considered if project area or scope justifies an exception. Awards need to
have a local 1:1 match.
If you plan to apply for this funding, your application will need to be
authorized by the Minneapolis City Council. The Council Committee
endorsement cycle will be:
Monday, July 16-Community Development Committee
Monday, July 23-Ways and Means Committee
Friday, July 27-City Council
The agenda setting meeting for the Community Development Committee is
Wednesday, July 11. If you are going to apply for an "Opportunity Grant",
please fax a one-paragraph description of your project including the amount
you are requesting to the Office of Grants and Special Projects,
612-673-3724 before July 11.
Questions of the Metropolitan Council should be directed to Joanne Baron at
651-602-1385.
