This compares operating budgets per capita for 1999. The data comes from
the National Transit Database, a federally mandated reporting program for
transit information. All transit systems (essentially) report into this
system so the data is very standardized across systems. This is the main
source of information for people doing research on transit systems across
the country and can be accessed at the Federal Transportation
Administration's website. The peer cities selected here are selected for
similarity in size and transit system (i.e. we don't compare to New York or
Omaha).
Transit operating budget per capita
Seattle $196.15
Portland $186.16
Pittsburgh $161.27
Cleveland $145.96
Baltimore $131.79
Denver $87.88
Cincinnati $85.61
Houston $80.96
Twin Cities $80.26
