Friday the 13th Holds No Fear for City Council Candidate

Minneapolis, July 13, 2001
Citing no fear of superstition, the neighbors for Jonathan Palmer
campaign announced that Jonathan Palmer will file to run for the
Minneapolis City Council Ward 6 seat today at 2:00pm on Friday the 13th,
largely considered to be day of bad luck. "Anything can be done with
the proper amount of motivation, determination, and perspiration", said
Lynn Daniels, campaign manager, "and nothing, least of all superstition,
will prevent us from giving the citizens a fair choice in Ward 6."

Palmer, nephew of the late Gleason Glover, longtime Civil Rights leader
and President of the Minneapolis Urban League for over 25 years, is
seeking to replace Jim Niland, in order to continue the grassroots work
done by both Glover and Niland. "Uncle Gleason was the inspiration for
me to get involved in the community, working with him showed me how
truly important it was to have dedicated community leaders and public
servants. Over the past few years Ive had the opportunity to work with
Jim, and with him stepping down, its essential to have a person who is
actually committed to the communitys needs and purpose to continue his
work."

Palmer, the only DFL candidate who a rents in a ward that is
predominantly rental residents and also the only candidate from the
Stevens Square-Loring Heights neighborhood, comes from a lifetime in and
around public service. His earliest experiences were working with his
grandfather who was a Master Electrician and a member of the
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) in Chicago and
his mother who served as White House Senior Policy Specialist Manager in
the Carter Administration and later as Director of Telecommunications
for U.S. Representative Mickey Leland.

He recently completed his third consecutive term as Chairman of the
Board of Directors for the Stevens Square Community Organization, and is
a mayoral appointee to the Capital Long-Range Improvements Committee for
the City of Minneapolis, while completing his thesis for his MA in
Public Affairs from the University of Minnesotas Humphrey Institute.

Keeping with the fearlessness of superstition, the Palmer Campaign will
host their official kickoff 13 days from now, July 26th, in Stevens
Square Park.
