last night. At a few minutes before 1am the Council decided 3-2 in favor
of a development of seven homes on a narrow strip of land between Sweeney
and Twin Lakes adjacent to Theodore Wirth Park. Green Party office
seekers in Minneapolis showed up to speak out against the project. ... >>
Thanks to the many Minneapolis residents who worked on trying to
protect this area, and to the many that attended the public hearing last
night. And 'night' is the right word, the Hidden Lake hearing ran from about
9:00 pm to 1:00 a.m.. Special thanks to Minneapolis Park Commissioners Dean
Zimmerman and Annie Young, who testified, as representatives of MPRB, in
favor of preserving the peninsula. Many good comments, from technical to
legal to emotional, were made by many speakers, but sadly, these were not
enough to persuade over the one additional vote that was needed. GV council
member LeSuer was articulate in stated that we should have higher density
along the transportation corridors, so that we can preserve the special
places like Twin Lake. He called this 'inner ring sprawl'.
Among other arguments in favor of development, like private property rights
and previously implied promises to the developer, I was surprised at how
strongly we were trashed by trash. Several Golden Valley residents
complained about litter, like beer cans, that Twin Lake users have been
leaving behind, and implied that development would help that problem.

>> One comment made late in the night by Councilmember Bakken struck me. He
stated that years ago when this property became available on the
market(presumably he meant the entire Glenwood Hills hospital site) the city
of Minneapolis or the MPRB could not come up with the money or desire to
acquire the property. >>
Now that Hidden Lakes Development has been given the official ok
for development, and in light of good sales of prior homes, the cost now
just for the peninsula is probably higher than the original price of the
entire Hidden Lakes development area.
