A city without squirrels is also a city without owls, bunnies, foxes,
etc....these little beasts are part of our urban wildlife.
Personally, I really like them - I feed them right along with the
birds and chipmunks and whatever else comes to eat in my yard. Not
only do they spread seeds with their munching and frantic burying
(they are responsible for the beautiful sunflowers all through my
yard which now draws the flocks of gold finches), but they are part
of the food chain - both as prey to the Raptors and foxes, and
carrion to a Black Crow (the very smart cousin to the Myna Bird) and
others on "clean-up crew."
As far as bulbs go, Freddie the Gardener (from the Freddie and Loren
show) says that if squirrels are getting your bulbs, then you are not
burying them deeply enough. He said that a tulip should go 7" or so.
And yes, I too sometimes have to deal with a squirrel who sets up
housekeeping in my roof - my husband and I will be evicting, and then
repairing the affected area this weekend.
Best to all of you.
