As the proud parents of a four-year-old, my wife and I need to check out
Minneapolis Public elementary schools this fall. We've already missed a
few open houses. My question (for response privately or publicly):
what's the best way to go about visiting them?

I lean toward the "show up during the school day" mode, but I don't know
how set up the schools are for this. Certainly, we don't want to put a
big divot in any young 'uns education. Is this possible? A good idea? If
not, what are the alternatives?

A couple of other observations from my wife, who went web surfing this
a.m.:

The City of Minneapolis website doesn't have an easy-to-find link to the
Minneapolis Public Schools site. Even though they are different
entities, that's not obvious to the general public. If we didn't miss a
link staring us in the face, can the city and schools site be linked
more obviously?

Also, while the MPS site lists basic info on all the elementary schools,
my wife was surprised that there were in-depth websites for some schools
(Burroughs) and not for others (Barton...I told her Barton was so
coveted they didn't need to advertise!). Again, if we didn't miss
something, it would be nice for parents to have every school with some
sort of site. Maybe a volunteer crew could do this (although I'm
guessing the schools have probably tried).

Last comment from my spouse: the district's website is written as if
every parent has a community school to choose from. However, as many in
King Field, East Harriet, Ward 1, and other parts of the city well know,
we are in the dreaded Open Areas. The district should acknowledge the
differing circumstances for Open Area parents, with a page about how our
options change.

Again, sorry if any of these exist and we missed 'em. If we've made an
oversight, feel free to correct by emailing me privately. If not,
consider them friendly suggestions.
