This fundraiser was rejected by the calendar at
Lavender Magazine due to the long standing feud
between Lavender ownership and the Gay 90's which is
hosting the event. The event is open to all ages and
is being organized by earnest group of young people.

By the way-I hear Lavender is for sale. Would your
class act be interested Mr. Brauer? Any other takers?

Thanks, David Strand

COMMUNITY FUNDRAISER TO BENEFIT THE YOUTH AND AIDS
 PROJECTS

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., September 28, 2001. Common
 Threads announced
today the entertainment for the "Common Threads: An
 AIDS Fundraiser"
benefit, to be held on Sunday, October 7th, 2001 at
 the Gay 90s in
Minneapolis. The benefit is scheduled to host Kandii
 Matthews, who
will be debuting her new single, "Sweet Giveness".
 The event will
also feature a silent auction on selected works of
 art, poetry
 readings, several musical performances, in-person
 resources on HIV
prevention, a retro dance music room hosted by
 Midnight in Halifax
and a moving performance art piece by Tony Andersen,
 the founder of
Common Threads. This three-hour benefit will begin
 promptly at 6pm.
This is an 18-and-up event, and a sliding scale
 $5-$15 donation is
 suggested.

ALL PROCEEDS BENEFIT THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA
 YOUTH AND AIDS
PROJECTS, whose goal is to "help high-risk youth
 prevent HIV and to
care for young people and families living with HIV
 infection."

WHY THIS EVENT CAME TO PASS

Tony Andersen conceived this event following a
 string of harrowing
events in his own life. As a teenager, there was
 little education
available on the ways HIV was transmitted and how it
 could be
prevented. Six years ago, at the age of nineteen,
 Tony was unaware of
the consequences that unprotected sex could have on
 an individual.
Resorting to sex work as a means for survival, he
 was approached by a
client who bound and raped him, only to be told
 afterward by the man
that he was HIV-positive. "By the grace of God,"
 Tony said, "I am not
[HIV] positive, but it opened up my eyes that
 HIV/AIDS education
needs to be [offered] in schools, the streets [and]
 wherever youth
 spend their time."

Tony hopes the "Common Threads: an AIDS Fundraiser"
 benefit will not
only educate people on the methods for safe sex, but
 also raise money
for education programs and future AIDS research.
 Tony adds, "I hope
that with this presentation, people can learn from
 my mistake and see
how a whole community can come together to entertain
 and [provide]
education on such a tremendous issue."

Common Threads was founded in Minneapolis and was
 put together by a
truly grassroots group of people, many of whom had
 never previously
met. Pending on the success of this year's benefit,
 Common Threads
hopes to expand into an annual event, while offering
 educational
resources on a proposed Web site. Additional
