A couple bits: 1. Three school board forums are set:
Tuesday, Oct. 9, 9-10:15 a.m. at Zion Church, 26th & Lyndale Av. N. (meeting of Northside religious leaders and PYC students) Two evening forums ....Monday, Oct. 22 at Washburn ....Thursday Oct. 25 at Jefferson 2. Things would look different if there were a political party or interest group that could turn the screw in service of the best interests of children. (It's an interesting idea, one that I'd encourage everyone to play with occasionally.) The Strib piece today and the Insight piece that appeared earlier in the week offer a primo example. The articles focused on Synergy, a residential school that perhaps could change the lives of some kids on the edge. It remains empty, after several million dollars of investment, because adults are trying to figure out how the law can protect the interests of parents and county authorities. The interests of kids...well... So...a campaign promise. I'd work not only to get that program open, but to provide some alternative to the assumption that this sort of squabbling-while-kids-pay-the-price is acceptable. (I know it's not an obvious school board issue...but it is an education issue, and I've tried to be clear that the board of education should focus on the lives of children, not just 80 buildings and the support services around them.) I invite other candidates to comment.
