Citizen's for a Loring Park Community (CLPC) has worked for the past two
years to get historic designation for the "Harmon Automobile District". Our
original intent was to preserve the Fawkes Block which is home to the Loring
Bar and Cafe and many other successful businesses. It is truly one of the
last unique and vibrant blocks in downtown i.e. not home to a sports bar.
Historic designation will allow us at least a chance to work with property
owners to control the future of these buildings. The designation area was
broadened to include a number of additional buildings north along Harmon
Place that were home to early automobile related businesses. Most of these
buildings are in excellent condition and some day could be restored to their
original splendor under new ownership. With two major educational
institutions in the area the future use of these buildings are endless, and
exciting!
What we need is for you to call your Council Member and Council Member Lisa
McDonald (673-2210 or E-Mail), Chair of Zoning & Planning, to express your
support of CLPC's efforts and the MHPC recommendation for a historic
district in the Harmon Place area.
If you would like to read the entire Historic Designation Study or know more
about our efforts please contact myself or staff Jana Metge.
Richard Anderson
President
CLPC
