Keith Reitman/World headquarters Penn/Bro, October 28, 2000 7:43 am CST "THIS NOT JUST IN...WHERE JOE BIERNAT GO, AIN'T NO QUID PRO QUO!! A hamburger and a glass of milk (happen to not be Kosher when taken together) reflect two of the corporations represented on West Broadway Avenue. Burger King Corp. and Merigold Foods each asked for and received special handling from the City. I believe B/K got a pass thru subsidy and other special considerations from the City to move up the Avenue from Penn to Bryant. They are busy as beavers having it their way at the new site but the old site just got boarded up and abandoned to rock throwers and graffitites, a catch basin for litter. Thank you B/K but, HEY JOE, wouldn't it have been prudent and reasonable to demand special consideration back from B/k at there old site BEFORE giving up the pink to accommodate them at the new digs? Our neighborhood is not wealthy so horse trading with the maker of the all beef Whopper would have been advised. Regarding Merigold Foods, their plea for more space to park trucks and other special considerations from the City did not appear to address our traffic issues at 4th St. and West Bro nor the housing crises in Hawthorne Neighborhood nor the goal of promoting retail development at this Gateway. Their monolithic factory site does not add to redevelopment of West Broadway. The hollow promises proffered by them about jobs, jobs, jobs, just didn't cut the cheese. They asked the neighborhood for a lot and you demanded nothing back on our behalf as far as I know. And got nothing. Our council member must act as our agent. Where's the beef, Joe, and maybe a little cheese gravy for our neighborhood?"
