Text of a larger e-mail... "The Minneapolis City Council will be voting on a demolition permit for the Guthrie Theater on Monday, October 30. This may be a move to railroad its destruction through before a new, more preservation-oriented Council is elected."
What are other people's opinions? Here's mine... it is ok to hold up the permit although I really dislike the slogan, "Save the Guthrie. (After all, Save the Schubert is a long ways from really happening). Didn't we learn some lessons from that experience? I think other options should be considered before just tearing the building down. There are other parking options at least for the interim. And is the expansion of the Sculpture Garden the best land use is another question. And then there is the question about the actual use of the building as it is with that "type (name)" theater it has. I hear it is not very usable - if that's true why are they building another much more expensive one ( I hope the answer is not just, "because Joe Dowling likes it and thinks they are intriguing for acting. IMHO, buildings are supposed to out last a person. I digress). I also thought the Walker was expanding south to the Allianz site (is that still in the works?). These questions plus many more would suggest that is not quite time for the wrecking ball and landfill. Plus it's three years away before the Guthrie even moves and that is somwhat dependent on the money they get, I would imagine. Which then gives them time to deconstruct the place instead of just blowing it up in one foul swoop. That's my two cents worth on the issue. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle...
