The word horde comes from Genghis Khan's army. A term meaning a group of people looking for plunder *IS* derogatory.
horde \Horde\, n. [F. horde (cf. G. horde), fr. Turk. ord?, ord[=i], camp; of Tartar origin.] A wandering troop or gang; especially, a clan or tribe of a nomadic people migrating from place to place for the sake of pasturage, plunder, etc.; a predatory multitude. --Thomson. Source: Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary, 1996, 1998 MICRA, Inc. Rich Chandler - Ward 9 --- Linda Higgins L. Hogan said to Rep. Kahn: Are you refering to these students, young people, concerned citizens and others as a "hoard"? Really? Is that how you think of your constituents, Phyllis? That's not very nice of you. Ahem. Per American Heritage Dictionary: "Hoard" means a secret fund or supply stored for the future; cache. "Horde" means a large group or crowd. Neither word is in the least bit derogatory.
