I was there tonight to see the two Deans in action and I leave it to others to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the candidates this late in the process. It was good to meet some old friends, good to see my preferred gent hold his own, but best of all to see the eager faces of the young people who were clearly having a swell time cheering their favorite and giving short shrift to those in the audience whose preferences lay elsewhere. That's democracy emerging before our very eyes. Never mind about the niceties of content - these kids were pumped and they'll never forget this night.
Yes, adults have an obligation to sort out all the nouns and verbs, shine up the adjectives and abverbs, and translate what was going on into something resembling a civics lesson. But what I saw were a bunch of kids realizing that what they think matters. Well worth the price of admission.
