There are ways to maximize the chances of your vote making a difference in a multi-member race. Suppose you've decided who the candidates most likely to be elected to board X are. If you want to maximize the chances that candidate A will be one of the winners, you vote only for candidate A. If you want to defeat candidate B, then vote for all of the other likely winners except candidate B. To really twist the knife, vote also for the candidate next most likely to be a winner.
This type of practice is more interesting when coupled with proportional representation, but it has a few uses in Minneapolis.
