It was important for the health of Phillips that there be an
influx of higher income people quickly. Portland Place and
SJI provide that.

As a Phillips resident for many years, our block clubs have been working
with East Phillips to create Affordable Housing opportunities. We figure
that hard-working folks working 40 hour weeks at what some call "livable
wages"...$6-$10.00 per hour is around $20,000 a year...before taxes.

Let's see Metro Median is around $70,000 I think was a figure I once heard,
tho' I'm not exactly sure...that makes most of my neighbors at 28%.

Anyway, we are working hard to figure out funding sources there are to write
down housing opportunities so that we do not displace Phillips residents and
continue to support the folks who live and work there. I'd say the bigger
question is when do we identify a "livable wage" at a livable
range...anyway....

The original Phillips plan called for revitalizing without displacing..
it is very tricky when you want to enhance the economic health so that
you can support the businesses....

I wonder how the Mercado is doing...? There seems to be lines of folks in
there daily when I am in there....many times I run into my neighbors.
I'd say, ask Juan Linares and John Flores...obviously they have discovered
what works.

Also, if you read the Family Housing Fund booklets...they talk about who are
the people in our neighborhoods and what is the average wage of grocery
store employees, school aides, artists, the foundation of our communities.

I for one, will always continue to support and advocate for my neighbors and
friends and everyone I know around me who is struggling to survive in this
2001 economy...but are hard-working and want to live in Phillips. I love my
neighborhood and would protest, just like Robert did, if there was an action
to displace any of my neighbors who had invested and been there for years.
