It would also be nice if the City would make this information available on the web. It should not be a problem for the city to make the Council Members emails available electronically. Some of the other material may require scanning. Part of getting trust back -- which the City needs to do as a whole -- means making this information more publically available. ===================================================== Mayoral Debate: I went to the Quorum Mayor's Debate last night. Sharon Sayles Belton got there about a half an hour late. One thing I heard from Sayles Belton, I hadn't heard before is that the City felt that with the recent state contract with Domestic Partner benefits -- it should make it easier to get the legislature to change the law that prevents the City from offering the benefits. CP Article on SSB Campaign: For example, Natalie Johnson Lee, a Green Party candidate trying to unseat council president Jackie Cherryhomes, had hoped that she and the mayor could help each other's campaign. As a black woman running for city council, Johnson Lee assumed that Sayles Belton would be eager to take her under her wing. But so far, she says, there's "no real relationship." Johnson Lee sees this as a mistake: Sayles Belton could pick up disaffected black voters in the Fifth Ward by aligning herself with Johnson Lee. But the mayor has been reluctant to turn against Cherryhomes, who, campaign watchers say, wants a low voter turnout. "Maybe the mayor doesn't think she needs the black votes up here," Johnson Lee grouses. "We could have a great partnership with the mayor, but she doesn't seem to want to be seen around here." Tellingly, mayoral campaign staffers curtly note that Sayles Belton always supports candidates endorsed by the DFL. =============================================== EY: The Fifth Ward historically has a low turnout. >From the City Website: 01 = BARRY DURAN ALEXANDER SR. 252 8.80 02 = JACKIE CHERRYHOMES 1,548 54.07 03 = NATALIE JOHNSON LEE 1,063 37.13 In the 2001 primary 2,931 people voted in the 5th ward. In 1997 1832 ballots were cast in the Ward 5 Primary. Cherryhomes got just over 1000 votes in that election. She got 2882 votes -- 61.77% in the general. 4818 ballots cast in 1997. If you project the same increase in voters in the 2001 general over primary, one would expect 7708 voters to turn out for the 5th ward general. Neither 5th ward candidate has communicated on this list. There's been some discussion about how Minneapolis Issues has a "southern focus". Well I think one way to change some of that is to get some more Northsiders to post. I've appreciated the posts by Senator Higgins and Keith Reitmann.
