Historic preservation took a big step forward in the Loring Park
neighborhood today with the City Council's decision to approve the Harmon
Place Automobile District! The vote was split into two parts with a 12 to 0
vote for the "Fawkes Block" and 10 to 2 for the rest of the district. The
district extends from the Loring Bar & Cafe property north to 11th Street
primarily including buildings that face Harmon Place. The designation will
insure that future development conform to the historic nature of the
district.
I want to thank the City Council for sharing our vision of the potential of
the area, to Kim Havey Chair of the CLPC Land Use Committee which held many
meetings with the Community, the Minneapolis Heritage Preservation
Commission and especially former member of that committee Bob Roscoe, and
all the residents of the Loring Park Community who supported our efforts to
make this a reality.
CLPC will continue to work with property and business owners in the district
through the Loring Business Assn. to address concerns that they may have and
to help make the district an area where businesses will thrive and where
residents and visitors will want to visit and enjoy for years to come.
Thanks again to all the list members who supported us through calls to your
Council Members - it worked!
Richard Anderson
Pres.
Citizens for a Loring Park Community
