I haven't been around long enough to know if this issue has been done to death on this list. I've lived in D.C. long enough to see really aggressive towing in action. The trucks literally line up on side streets, waiting for the magic moment (I think it's 3 PM) for No Rush Hour parking to go into effect. At 3:10 there are NO cars blocking the lanes for rush hour traffic.
D.C. does the same on snow emergency routes. Admittedly their concepts of "snow emergency" and "snow emergency route" are pretty different from ours, but the streets are free of parked cars when they are supposed to be. We still do Minnesota Nice when it comes to parked cars. Just yesterday someone on this list argued against east-west, north-south plowing because of all the people who would get towed (yes, I know I didn't paraphrase that correctly, sorry). But if quick towing works, which it does, even in a city that caters to cars with diplomat plates, people who know VIPs, etc., why not try it? Since we've got a new set of people coming into City Hall, now is the perfect time to give it a whirl, I'd think. If it doesn't work over three winters, there would still be a year to backpedal and mend fences. If the plowing does improve considerably with cars hauled out of there quickly, City Hall would have a year to take credit and bows. Extra income from tags and tows might help with other problems.
