Vance Opperman will be a guest tomorrow on the Jason Lewis show the 7:00
hour -- AM 1500. So folks from Minneapolis Issues should call in to talk
about it.

Jason Lewis was ranting about stadium boondoggles today -- and will be
doing the same tomorrow -- one of the topics which I agree with him on.

Apparently there is going to be a Save the Twins rally on Sunday -- I might
go by there with a sign that says "Save the Taxpayers" -- that's who is
going to be left holding the bag.

Old and New Math

I agree with the comments about the wisdom of using calculators in math
classes. What you don't learn by using calculators is a sense of whether
the answer you get makes sense or not -- that's the type of thing one
learns by solving problems by hand. When I taught Chemistry at River
Falls, some students were using calculators to multiply by 1. I thought
that rather depressing.

As one of the math professors says at the U --

Mathmaticians solve the problems
Physicists plug numbers into a formula
Engineers plug numbers into a formula but use the WRONG formula
And English Majors don't know what the heck you are talking about.

The Property Owner for November is out on the stands.....

Meanwhile the Property Owner leads with an editorial in favor of stadium
funding. I thought I was reading the Star Tribune for a minute.

Some rather interesting -- and prophetic lines from the October edition:

"Of course we might eventually elect honest people to the Council who would
be helpful to the city, not taking it as a 'public trough from which to
munch strawberries.' "

Then in the November issue regarding Jackie Cherryhomes.....

"Community activist Jim McCauley provided hard hitting articles that drove
the stake through the most powerful person at City Hall, and shepherded
work of lawn signs, phone banks, and limos provided for voters to win the
removal of Cherryhomes from city offices.

"She will forever be remembered for helping loose the City's bond rating by
eroding the tax base with over 15,000 boarded up and demolished units.
R.I.P. Jackie."
