The problem is that the census data reported today comes from the Census 2000 Supplementary Survey. This survey comes from a sampling separate from the normal census. The sample size is smaller than it should be to be strongly statistically significant, it does not necessarily correlate with other data, and it does not include the whole metro area. It was conducted as a test for future widespread use. Most of the folks in the demographic circles are warning not to put a lot of weight on this data because of these problems.
