I have to admit the MPS issues frighten me; they seem so complex that I am almost afraid to try and get my arms around them.
I would like to look at a different angle and get feedback from the list: is the starting salary for teachers enought o draw talented new workers into the field? I work for Hennepin County and about a year and a half ago, a new worker came in who had been teaching in a suburban school district in one of the first ring suburbs. It was a school district that is looked at as being a very good one; I had friends sell their house and move into this district because they thought it was one of the best. The former teacher took a pay cut to come and work at the County, but would eventually recoup her loss. When I asked why she gave up on a teching career she said that it was way too much work for the money; even with summers off. I found this discouraging simply because she is a very bright, talented individual and if school districts are losing people like this because of workload and salary issues, perhaps a new emphasis on recruitment ought to be looked at.
