Mr. Mann does it again. Where in the world do these claims originate? What
utter nonsense to suggest the public schools have no reading instruction. No
public education system could operate without reading instruction as a
fundamental curriculum.

Now, it's true that many learners emerge unable to read, write and compute,
but this is at least as much a function of home life and motivation as it is
of the existence of lesson plans. Reading prowess, and I can attest, begins
in the earliest years, but if a child born of parents who never themselves
learned to read and/or write, it's difficult at best to expect the schools
to remediate that illiteracy without dragging entire classes back to
pre-school.

There is a desperate need to remove the stigma of illiteracy and to provide
separate tutoring for children too far behind their peers to keep up in
their academics.

But, examples of same are not indicators of a total lack of reading
instruction. I think we have a school-basher in our midst.
