Oh...Oh, I just hit my funny bone....I hate when that happens...as much as I tire of the Search Institute stuff.
There have been several researchers who have, over the past 10 years, followed the Search Institute from it's meager beginnings to the influence it has become. Many of their studies followed up on the Search Institute's Developmental Assets and Liabilities for children. It has been stated in their findings that there is no concrete evidence that a child who has 30 assets will be more successful that a child who has 15 or 10 or even 4. Simple logic might tell us that the more support a child has would increase their chance of long term success. But we also know that is not a given. While I'd love to expound in great detail some of these findings, I won't. Suffice it to say that Dr. Benson, et al have found their niche in our system. I sat in a meeting of the St. Louis Park's 'Children's First' initiative several years ago, and listened as Dr. Benson told the audience that if there were ANY "nay sayers" the program would fail. Wow, what a concept. We have this program for you, but if anyone speaks in the negative about it, it will fail. So any failure could certainly not be attributed to the Search Institute, but to people like me who dare to challenge the findings. You'll have to excuse me now, I have a therapy appointment. The failure of society is a heavy burden.
