As a person without a list of Section 8 apartments, I can
tell you that I wouldn't choose an apartment in 'Lakeville,
St. Cloud, Aitkin, or Edina' either. Why? Because I'm a city
person. The culture of small towns and up-scale suburbs is
so very different that I would be miserable there. Further,
there is very little in the way of public transportation
which can carry me to the places I would want to go to. Even
if, from your position as a by-stander, you think this would
improve the lives of young women and their children, you
cannot ask them to switch cultures. The culture of a city is
part of their support network. SSB, our mayor for another
month or so, used this as a strategy and failed miserably.
She (through MCDA/City Council) took down lots of
marginal--and some not-so-marginal--housing, only to find
that people refused to go to Lakeville, Minnetonka, Edina,
St. Cloud? good grief.
