The legislative forum starring Neva Walker, Karen Clark and Linda Berglin had about 15 - 20 folks. 3 City Council people -- Robert Lilligren, Dean Zimmerman and Scott Benson as well as a collection of noble freethinkers from the district.
Senator Berglin and Clark presented about the budget shortfall -- and about some of the difficult choices they have to make. They asked for feedback about how people wanted them to look at tax and spending priorities. Issues that came up: A woman from the "Welfare Rights" committee spoke. She talked about the need to temporarily put a moratorium on the 5 year welfare time limit. The flyer that she came with says "put a time limit on poverty not on welfare." Roads/35W widening: The legislators want to have a group of people advising them about 35W -- and Robert Lilligren volunteered to organize such a group. Call Robert at 673-2208 to get on that committee. The Stadium also came up. Karen Clark voiced support for the "public ownership" bill being pushed by Phyllis Kahn. Neva Walker talked about her vote in favor of stadium funding in committee. She said she did this for "political reasons" but didn't clearly explain what those were. There was also talk about building up the public health system so it is able to deal with issues like bio and chemo terrorism. After the forum: Robert Lilligren told Rep. Neva Walker that his friend and campaign manager Tom Reid would be willing to help her get up and running on the use of "information systems." A ways back, when I talked with Neva on the phone, I suggested that she get some assistance from the technical support staff with getting her email set up with filters so she could better get through her constituent email. Our district (61) seems to have a collection of legislators who are incredibly reluctant to learn to use email to communicate with their constituents.
