Rosalind worte that she understood the internet/porn
flap was not an issue handled well by Ms. Lawson. In
the strib article today however, it did not even list
that problem as a reason given by the board for her
termination. The porn issue was only listed as
something that happened during her period of
management.

I would like to clarify that my post was not intended
as a critical review of Ms. Lawson, She served the
library and our city, with accolades from many, for a
number of years. I have had my disagreements with her
but they are disagreemets we have discussed openly. My
point is that I believe the reasons for the
non-renewal of her contract go beyond the published
issues such as "she applied to another job and we are
offended."

I talk to a number of staff and from what I understand
one of the greatest problems and frustrations they
face is that they are being asked to provide
remodelled and fully serviced libraries similar to the
Hosmer model throughout the city, and they are being
asked to do that without the money needed to
adequately operate them. The only reason they have
pulled it off at Hosmer is the $500,000 in additional
outside support received, largely from NRP groups. A
funding source that will not be there for the other
libraries with the new NRP emphasis on housing.

This is a problem that cannot, and should not, be laid
at the feet of Ms. Lawson alone.
