This is another example of using "social justice" to get taxpayer money for
selfish gains. It's been done time and time again using affordable housing
as the "given" reason.
A project similar to Lydia House has been proposed in Seven Corners - where
the proponents of the shelter intend to keep 90% of the money for
themselves.
If we really want to help those who are suffering, let's be sure that the
money gets to THEM. Why don't we have a public facility to house and care
for the homeless, mentally ill, chronically drunk. This would be a good and
just use of public money. I believe that social services are the
responsibility of Hennepin County, not the City of Minneapolis.
We can serve the needy without enriching private operators -- and without
destroying our neighborhoods and small businesses in the process.
Always ask the three most important questions:
How much will it cost?
Who forks over the money?
Who pockets the money?
