It was a good idea to try something different with the council members after
that first meeting. Consider that if the council members wage a war with
each other, the weapons they have at their disposal are our tax dollars and
public works.

Evverybody knows that it's not good for the city if personal animosity
becomes the basis for public policy.

We don't know that this counselor is going to solve anything, but it's
certainly worth a try. I was disappointed to read that Lisa Goodman split
early. I couldn't tell from the article whether she left in a huff or just
had to get to a doctors appointment or something like that. Anyone know
that?

Also on the topic of the cost of the counselor . . .

The newspaper likes to make a big deal about people who make $175 an hour
when it's something unusual like this. But really that's not a huge price
tag for a professional. I don't think the paper would scream out if city
hall hireed a photographer for $125 an hour. There was a photographer at the
inagural reception right? How about independent accountants or lawyers or
heavens forfend a computer consultant? Those people all make similar hourly
rates. But somehow it's outrageous when the professional has expertise in
interpersonal communication and diplomacy. It think it's a very provincial
Midwestern attitude that such things are not worth considering.
