Architects from Cesar Pelli & Associates and Architectural Alliance
will present final Master Plan options to the New Central Library
Implementation Committee on Wednesday, January 16 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the
Project Office, 15 S. Fifth St., #210, Minneapolis. This meeting is open to the
public, as are all Implementation Committee meetings.

The Master Plan will determine where the major project components will
be situated on the two-block site (bounded by Nicollet and Hennepin
Avenues and 4th Street and Washington Avenue). The New Central Library
Implementation Committee is expected to select a master plan and forward a
recommendation to the Library Board and City Council.

The choice is between a Master Plan that places the new Central Library
on its present site and one that places it on the adjacent block across
Third Street. Other proposed components of the two-block, mixed-use project
are a new Minnesota Space Discovery Center and Planetarium, a vibrant public
commons, retail space, parking, and a residential development. The
proposed Minnesota Space Discovery Center and Planetarium would occupy the same
block as the Library, possibly as a rooftop attraction.

In exploring the options, the team is looking at a number of factors
that impact the site and its potential uses, including the function of the
Library and building program, access to transportation, nearby public
green space, and neighboring residential and retail space.
