List members may recall Charger, the (now) 1 year-old black Labrador shot 4
times by a Minneapolis police officer August 13, 2001 after police were
dispatched to a north Minneapolis residence to investigate a noise
complaint. To review (August seems so long ago - ) and update on the
matter:

1) August 28, Jeremy Meyer (Charger's owner) reported the incident to the
Civilian Review Authority. The complaint is still under investigation.
Sandra Meyer (Jeremy's Mom and Charger's other owner) filed a claim for
approximately $3,000 with the City's Office of Risk Management for
reimbursement of Charger's medical expenses.

2) October 31, the (then) Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton's policy aide, Ron
Thaniel, met with the Meyer's to discuss their concerns about the incident.

3) November 2, 2001, the Minneapolis Claims Committee denied Sandra Meyer's
request for reimbursement for Charger's medical expenses.

4) November 30, Sandra Meyer filed a written appeal of the Claims Committee
decision with the (then) Chair of the Minneapolis City Council Committee on
Claims, Paul Ostrow.

5) After several "cattle call" court appearances throughout the fall, the
disorderly conduct issued by Minneapolis police to Jeremy Meyer the night
Charger was shot was dropped by the Hennepin County prosecutor's office
December 17.

Paul Ostrow's office informed us this week that Sandra Meyer's appeal is
scheduled to be heard by the Claims Committee Tuesday, February 5. The
current members of that committee are:

                Dean Zimmerman, Chair*
                Barbara Johnson
                Paul Ostrow
                Lisa Goodman*
                Barret Lane*

                * new members

If anyone is in the mood to write letters or make a phone call to any of
these members, please feel free to do so.

Recognizing those who have defended Minneapolis police previously on this
list, I want to stress that Sandra Meyer herself is not asking for an
indictment of the police - she's simply would like Charger's medical
expenses reimbursed recognizing that the cause of Charger's injuries were
the actions of a City of Minneapolis employee.

Thanks again to those who have already contacted the City about this matter.
Your support is appreciated. I almost forgot -

6) Charger is well and happy.
