K-Mart has made it official. They have filed for Chapter 11
bankruptcy. This is big for the city. There is that long
talked about K-Mart sitting in the middle of Nicollet Ave.,
and as contentious as the negotiations have been for
reopening the street, and how to do so, it appears that the
luxury of time for deciding said issue may be quickly
evaporating.

On one hand, it would seem that this is an answer to the
city's problems regarding how to maneuver K-Mart if/when the
street is reopened. The impediment to the plans may just
evaporate.

On the other hand, if this Chapter 11 spells the end of
K-Mart period, that [possibly very abruptly] removes a key
retail option for at least 4 of the city's south side
neighborhoods.

Just curious if the Council is working on a plan of attack
here.
